What PCBs Are Made Of

These boards begin as a thin sheet of material (traditionally glass fiber epoxy laminate) that a layer of coppering is applied to through a chemical process to make them receive the printing and conducting ability. The “print” is essentially the design that conducts the electrical components to one another. The process of making the printed section of a PCB can be quite extensive and requires the transferring of a printed design to the board with an acid resistant liquid.

Getting the Board

After the print has been transferred, the printed circuit board is placed into a tank of acid, usually consisting of Ferric Chloride Solution/Etching Solution. This bath in acid will remove the large copper areas from the board and leave behind the printed design in thin copper, making for an electrical connection between components in all electrical devices. Following the acidic bath, holes are drilled into the PCB to making mounting points for the components to be used. Then a final protective coating is applied to the board in an effort to prevent any corrosion of the remaining copper pieces.

Many electronic enthusiasts can make their own printed electronic boards in less than an hour and a half and several electronic companies allow for custom printed and unique types of boards serving a wide range of devices.
